It’s easy for anyone to say they are going to lose weight and start being healthy. Taking the first step towards your goal is to recognize your problems and setbacks. There is a reason why you are unhealthy and reasons why you’re living the lifestyle you have been living. Keep a journal and write in it daily. The best way to recognize the problem is any time you feel like eating and you aren’t hungry write it down and answer these questions:
- What triggered your sudden hunger?
- Why do you have the desire to eat right now?
- Are you bored?
- Was there an event that occurred today where you became emotional over?
- When was the last time you have eaten?
Once you answer these questions read them over. In many cases we eat when we aren’t hungry because we are bored or because something has happened so we become emotional eaters. Eating when you’re bored or emotional may occur daily, which is why you have become overweight and unhealthy. It is crucial to recognize why you have the desire to eat so that you can fix it. If you understand and read your body’s signals, then you can understand yourself more and know when not to eat.
Knowing your body is key when trying to lose weight and reach your fitness goals. Once you recognize the problem to your overeating, try and write down ideas on what to do when those instances strike. Here are some examples that may help you:
- Read a book. Opening a book when you feel like eating and are not hungry will eventually take your mind off of that desire.
- Go for a walk. Not only will it get your mind off food but it’ll help you reach your goal of working out at least 30 minutes a day.
- Drink a glass of water. Most instances where you feel like you need food are often mistaken for being thirsty. So drink up!
- Call one of your closest friends. Taking the time to talk to someone you care about will increase your mood and make you not feel like you need food.
Just remember, know your body. If you have a tendency to overeat at dinner try and realize that it takes on average 20 minutes for your body to register that it is full. So take smaller bites and be in tune to your body signals. Ignoring your body signals will allow you to over eat and not realize it at the time. Be conscious of everything you eat and when you eat it even down to the tiniest French fry.
Once you are able to discover the problem and things in your life that are setting you back from reaching your weight loss and fitness goals you’ll be one more step closer to success. However, these problems will keep on occurring and you’ll have to learn how to deal with them appropriately and they may sneak up on you once in a while. Time is what you need to learn how to effectively succeed.
