Fitness And The Sun
With the summer just around the corner and the increase of exercise activities being done outside, we often have a tendency to forget one very important thing: the sun.
While our whole purpose of being outside and actually doing something other than sitting inside and watching television is to be healthier, neglecting the health of our skin and how damaging the sun is to it will defeat the whole purpose of that long walk with the dog.
Being outside while the sun is at its peak, roughly around 12:00 p.m. to around 3:30 p.m. without any sun protection is endangering the health of your skin and will cause an increase of the chances of getting skin cancer.
It is important to keep our bodies fit, eat healthy, and be outside whenever possible however, one of the most crucial things to remember is remembering the importance of skin health.
Before you head outside to walk the dog or work on the garden remember these simple things:
- Use an SPF other than one in your moisturizer. The SPF in your moisturizer will not stay on your skin for as long and you will have to reapply it often. If you are going to be outside in the sun for an hour or more, put on a regular sunscreen that prevents against UVB and UVA rays. The extra effort will be worth it in the end.
- While you may remember to put sunscreen on your face, neck, arms, chest and legs we often forget the tips of our ears and the tops of our feet. These two spots are highly exposed to the sun and often never have sunscreen applied to them. So when you put sunscreen on your face remember your eyes, and when you put it on your legs remember the tops of your feet.
- One of the main complaints of using a sunscreen is the fact that sunscreens have a tendency to make sensitive skin break out. This is an ongoing occurrence for you, look for an oil free sunscreen and this will get rid of those annoying break outs caused by your old sunscreen.
- So you remembered to apply sunscreen, however two hours later you forget to reapply. Reapplying is just as important as applying the first time. Set an alarm on your phone to go off every two hours when you are outside so that you are reminded to reapply.
- Protecting your skin is important but so is protecting your hair. Your hair can become sun damaged just as much as your skin can. If you color your hair the rays from the sun can fade your hair color. Also, the sun is very drying to the hair follicles, so buy a sun protector for your hair or wear a hat next time your outside.
The skin is the largest organ in our body, so taking care of it will go along with your new healthy and fit lifestyle. Just remember to keep reapplying that sunscreen!
