What Are Vitamins?
Vitamins and minerals are substances that are found in the foods we eat. Our body needs them to work properly, so that our body functions the way it is meant to. When it comes to vitamins, each one has a special role to play. There are two types of vitamins: fat soluble and water soluble. When you consume foods that contain fat-soluble vitamins, the vitamins are stored in the fat tissues in the body and in the liver. They wait around in your body fat until your body feels the need to use them.
Fat-soluble vitamins stay stored in your body for long periods of time — some may stay for a few days, some may even remain in your body for up to 6 months. Eventually when it's time for them to be used, special carriers in your body will take them to where they are most needed. Vitamins A, D, E, and K are all fat-soluble vitamins.
Water-soluble vitamins are different than fat soluble vitamins. When you consume foods that have water-soluble vitamins, the vitamins don't get stored as often in your body. Instead, they travel through your bloodstream. Whatever your body doesn't use comes out when you urinate.
These specific kinds of vitamins have to be replaced often because they don't stick around and come out of the body daily. These types of vitamins includes vitamin C and the group of B vitamins — B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), niacin, B6 (pyridoxine), folic acid, B12 (cobalamine), biotin, and pantothenic acid.
What are Minerals?
Minerals are crucial nutrients that our body needs in small amounts to work properly and efficiently. We receive minerals from eating foods.
Minerals can be found in unreliable amounts in a variety of foods such as meat, cereals (including cereal products such as bread), fish, milk and dairy foods, vegetables, fruit (especially dried fruit) and nuts.
Minerals have three main purposes.
- To build strong bones and teeth.
- To control bodily fluids in and outside of the body.
- To turn the food we consume daily into energy.
These are all essential minerals that our body needs:
- calcium
- iron
- magnesium
- phosphorus
- potassium
- sodium
- sulphur
Can A Person Consume Too Many Vitamins?
The answer to that is essentially yes. It is possible for a person to consume too much of a specific vitamin. If you are taking vitamin supplements, it is important to keep track of what you eat following taking those supplements before consuming too many vitamins or minerals. Vitamins and minerals are essential for our body to be healthy but it may also cause the body to be unhealthy by consuming too many.
When consuming foods, look on the nutritional food label to see how much of specific vitamins it contains. Vitamins can help your skin to be clearer and brighter, help prevent against diseases and illness, and vitamins can also make you feel healthier. They should be an essential component of everyone’s daily diet and should be something you never skimp out on.
